COLUMBIA — Luana Branco refereed several volleyball games at the Show-Me State Games on Saturday and Sunday at Southwell Complex at Columbia College.
Branco, a Columbia College volleyball player, said she got involved in the games as an official because her coach wanted players to help out. She said being a part of the games was a nice, fun experience and said it was not difficult to officiate.
“The coaches are very patient,” Branco said.
Parents and supporters cheered on fifth- and sixth-grade volleyball teams Saturday. Games continued in different divisions Sunday.
Abbey Verslues, 12, of Jefferson City played on Friday for the Central Missouri Volleyball Club Comets. This is her first year playing on a competitive team, however, she started playing the sport in a recreational league in the third grade.
Verslues said she enjoys all of the action in volleyball. During Friday’s game, she said she attempted an overhand serve for the first time and got the move right.
Alli Dalton, 15, and Sarah Steagall, 14, played Sunday for the Thunder team from St. Genevieve. They both play volleyball for the club team and their school team. They said they prepared for the games by practicing for two hours twice a week.
Dalton and Steagall said playing in the Show-Me Games was exciting.
“It’s fun playing against all the different people and teams,” Dalton said.

- Runners of all ages get a good start on Sunday at Show-Me State Games Race Walk. The runners and walkers ran a 5k around downtown and ended at Faurot Field.
- Demolition Derby drivers at the closing event of the Boone County Fair ram into each other in hopes that their car will be the last one still running. Waving the checkered flag signals to the judges and other drivers that their car is no longer operational.
